About the Book

From Frozen Ponds to Beehive Glory: The Story of Dixie Arena Gardens

Author: Dave Cook

Read how the community raised $200,000 in 1949 to build Dixie Arena Gardens and how the Dixie Beehives became a dynasty in Ontario hockey winning four league and three Provincial championships.  Discover which 48 Beehives players went to the NHL, and dozens of others who went into the WHA and European leagues.  The book lists the names of more than 700 players who proudly wore the Dixie Beehive sweaters in the team's three decades.

About the Author
Dave Cook lives in Applewood Acres with his wife, Sophie and son Jonathan.  His father, Norman, was born in Dixie and attended Dixie Public School.  Dave's early years were spent on Runnymede Road, near The Junction in Toronto.  In the late 1940s the family purchased property on the 6th Line in Malton where he attended Elmbank and Malton Public Schools.  The family moved into Applewood in 1957 after their Malton property was expropriated for the airport expansion.  Dave attended Applewood Public School and Gordon Graydon Secondary School.  He is a former radio broadcaster, newspaper reporter, municipal councillor and for many years was actively involved in North American motor-sports.  From Frozen Ponds to Beehive Glory, the History of the Dixie Arena, is his second book on what he calls "a living history" of the area.  His first book Apple Blossoms and Satellite Dishes - celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Applewood Acres, dealt with the history of the first major subdivision west of Toronto.
