Mississauga News Athletic Bursary

The 2010 Mississauga News Athletic Bursary application submission:

 This program, being managed by the Mississauga Sports Council, provides one female and one male graduating high school student – going on to post-secondary education, while continuing their athletics - with the opportunity to obtain $1,000 in support.

Mail or deliver completed applications to the Mississauga Sports Council office at the Sports Complex (Hershey SportZone).

Sports Complex hours are from 8 am - 11pm. The Sports Council office is off the main lobby (near the elevator). There is a DROP BOX by our office door.

Criteria & Application Forms

To be eligible, a candidate must be a resident of Mississauga, be graduating from a secondary school, be enrolling in a recognized Canadian college or university, meet the admission standards of the college or university they are attending, and be furthering their athletic career while attending their school of choice.
Two letters of reference from their current school, another letter of reference from a coach, a copy of the candidate’s Official School Transcript, and a copy of the current
marks must be included with the application forms. In an essay form, the candidate also has to submit a one-page typed essay about his/her long-term goals and career objectives.

The Sports Council feels very strongly that sport supports both leadership and academic development and is proud to manage a program that contributes and motivates our youth to reach for their dreams.
The 2009 recipients were Alicia Cisterna of John Cabot S.S. and Gregory Katayama of St. Francis Xavier S.S.

The 2008 recipients were Courtney Condie of Applewood S.S. and Derek Quinn of Rick Hansen S.S.

The 2007 male recipient, Cody Allard, was a Meadowvale S.S. athlete competing in such sports as football, curling and lacrosse. Cody applied to Uof T, McCaster, Western and Guelph Universities where he'd like to study Life Sciences.

Laura Machado was our 2007 female bursary recipient. In the sports realm, Laura excels in soccer. She is a graduate of Iona S.S. Her Erin Mills Soccer Club coach, Joe Corapi, says "Laura demonstrates commitment and high-level achievement within the sport of soccer."

The 2006 female recipient, Kyesia O’Neale was Gordon Graydon S.S. female athlete of the year. She went on to a University of Toronto Engineering program, while playing on their Varsity Blues Field Hockey Team. She also made the Ontario Under-19 field hockey team and was one of 15 Ontario female athletes nominated to the 2006-07 Quest for Gold Athlete Assistance Program.

The male recipient, Cauchy Muamba-Tshibangu, graduated from Father Michael Goetz S.S. He was a multi-sport athlete and member of the Student Council. His high school basketball coach Ray Kulig, said of Cauchy is “a role-model, a leader and an inspiration to his teammates”. Cauchy went on to St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, playing on the varsity football team.

Bursary recipients will be recognized on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 at the 36th Annual Sports Awards Dinner.
