Celebrating the Spirit of Sport in Mississauga! Sports Week got off the starting block Monday evening (Feb. 23, 7-9 p.m.) with the Kick-Off Reception in the Gordon Graydon Hall at Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Centre. Registration Form
True to tradition, among the Kick-off highlights was the introduction of the 2009 inductees into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame. Details of a new "Lewis Lawrence Gymnastics Bursary" were unveiled. Developed by the Sports Council and Mississauga Central Lions in honour of Lewis Lawrence, this new addition to our sportscene will provide much needed financial support for dedicated Mississauga gymnasts. “The program is built around three areas Lewis feels contribute to the sound development of our youth, says Manny Castellino, past-president of the Central Lions - “education, sports and community service”. Bristol Middle School put on an energized Sports Week "Stomp" performance. The Mississuaga Chiefs Girls Hockey team made a special presentation(medallion and toque) to Mayor McCallion as part of their provincial championship celebration. The Kick-Off Reception also raised the curtain on the new Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame education program which provides an opportunity for our youth to engage in activities where the equipment they need does not include a couch, tv remote, computer or cell phone. All they need is an inquiring mind, willingness to learn and some good old-fashioned energy and enthusiasm. The program combines our developing Hall of Fame, a motivational chat with one of our Hall of Famers, and then an invigorating physical activity. All of this on location at the Sports Complex(Hershey SportZone). One of the highlights of the Sports Week roll out will be a Hall of Famer chat with Grey Cup champion quarterback Chuck Ealey. As a bonus to those attending the Kick-off reception, we featured popcorn and a special screening of “UNDEFEATED – The Chuck Ealey Story,” a documentary filmed for the PBS network. The evening wraped up with a dessert reception, a perfect setting for networking, and a great forum to meet, greet and talk with fellow community sports supporters. On Tuesday (Feb. 24) Sports Week attention shifted to the Mississauga Senior Games(MSG) Volunteer Information Session at the Sports Complex (Hershey SportZone). With plans in the works to move many of the Games’ events to the Sports Complex in the Fall, volunteers will got a chance to tour the venue. “We felt that hosting a Volunteer Information Session would give us a chance to share our plans and encourage people to join us for a fun-filled Fall Games,” says Shirley Rowett, Volunteer Chair on the Senior Games Board of Directors. “We had a great turn out and interest from all kinds of volunteers, no experience necessary.” The Mississauga District 20 group wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to attend, especially knowing the potential for bad weather. The MSG Board of Directors agreed that providing transportation for those who would like to start the fun a little sooner, would be an hospitable way to welcome volunteers. “Sara Paradis, our City Liaison, was been a great help arranging for a bus“ shares Rowett. The bus schedule's first pick-up spot was the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre (near Cawthra Community Centre). Next stop was the Square One Older Adult Centre en-route to the Sports Complex. On Saturday (Feb. 28) Square One Shopping Centre once again hosted the traditional Sports, Camps and Leisure Show treating visitors to an early whiff of summer living. Exhibitors – representing a wide range of recreational, leisure and sporting interests – were on hand, ready and eager to showcase and promote their various programs, goods and offer spring and summer recreational registration opportunities, summer camps and programs to appeal to various age, range and interests. “It’s virtually a community one-stop shop for local sports and recreation enthusiasts of any age”, says Sports Week Co-chair Nick Christian. Partners, The Mississauga News and Square One, the Sports Council were pleased to have the community drop by and check out the great lineup of local sports and recreation groups exhibiting their programs and taking registration for the upcoming season.
