ANDREA OWOC CHENNETTE

Name: OWOC, CHENNETTE
Sport: Gymnastics

Date of Birth:
Place of Birth:

     Little did she know, or anybody else suspect, the first time she went to the Mississauga Gymnastic Club that Andrea Owoc would one day become queen of Canadian gymnastics.
     “My mom enrolled me in the gym club’s program because I was bouncing around the couch at home so much,” Andrea recalls. “Someone had to teach me (how to bounce properly) so I wouldn’t hurt myself. I had so much energy to expand.”
      As it turned out, eight-year-old Andrea had the right stuff for bouncing around and all other such things gymnasts need because just after eight short months in the recreational program she graduated to the higher competitive level.
     The rest is sports history.
     Four years later, Andrea was Canadian junior champion and in the same year vaulted off into an international competitive career full of milestones.
Consider these accomplishments:
     She became the first Mississauga-trained gymnast to win a Canadian national senior championship;
     She became the first Mississauga-trained gymnast to gain a place on Canada’s Olympic team;
     She became the first Mississauga athlete to be recognized at the highest level by the Canadian Gymnastic Federation — after retiring, she was awarded the “Gold” level in the Federation’s Hall of Honour. Until her induction into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, there were only 33 gold-level gymnastic distinctions awarded in Canada with Andrea the sole Mississauga recipient.
     Andrea spent 12 years at a competitive level, 10 of them with the Mississauga club.

      Internationally, she made her debut at the Japan Junior meet followed by selections for senior-level international competitions in each of the next seven years — the Canadian Classic in ’82; a meet in Mexico City in ’83; the 1980 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (one of 21 Mississauga athletes and the only gymnast) and a meet in Antibes, France in ’the same year; her busiest year on the international circuit in ’85 with the World Championships in Montreal, the Australian Games Down Under where she finished fourth overall and a meet in Cattbus, East Germany; in ’86 the Commonwealth Championships in Scotland followed by a meet in Belgium; the World University Games in Yugoslavia and a tune-up meet in Hungary in ’87; and finally a curtain call on a global scene in China in 1988.

     On the domestic front, Andrea won a silver on bars and bronze all-around while leading Ontario to the team gold medal in the1983 Canada Games. In the same year at Burnhamthorpe Arena, she became Ontario female champion and later led the provincial team to the national title.
     A runner-up in ’85, Andrea’s dream of becoming Canadian overall champion came true the following year — an event she looks back on with fond memories. “Winning this national title was especially memorable and significant for me,” she says.

     Following her retirement from the competitive scene, Andrea accepted an offer of a gymnastic scholarship to the University of Florida and following graduation, she returned to Canada and got married. A trailblazer, Andrea is considered the first truly significant Canadian female gymnast in the international arena. Andrea Owoc Chenette’s many accomplishments were recognized by her hometown when she was inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame for the year 1995.
