In his competitive days as he faced the best Canada and the rest of the world had to offer in the roaring 1920s, oarsman William MacPherson Ross wrote a few bright chapters in the Canadian rowing book of achievements. He was simply one of the best there was as rows of medals he won various competitions provide ample proof. The medal he said he was most proud of was a bronze he won while representing Canada in the 1928 Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam, Holland. He considered the third-place finish in the 1,000-meter eights the “most outstanding achievement” of a golden career. Mississauga paid tribute to long-time city resident Ross (he lived here for more than half-a-century since 1937) by inducting him into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame for 1982. Born in Acton, Ross competed throughout his career in the colours of the Toronto Argonauts Rowing Club. In addition the rowing solo, he was also a oarsman for the Argo junior and senior fours (1926-’27) and for six years the senior eights (1928-’32). He was first bitten by the rowing bug during the 1926 Dominion Day Regatta on Centre Island when the Argonaut four won a silver medal. They duplicated the feat later in the same year at the Canadian National Exhibition Memorial Day, then savoured an even brighter moment when they captured the Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen (CAAO) championship at the Canadian Henley Regatta. In addition to competing in the 1928 Olympic Games, Ross also represented Canada internationally in the Grand Challenge race in England (1929) and the British Empire Games in 1932. Following his competitive career, Ross went on to coach the Argonaut Rowing Club. He spent two years as President of the CAAO during the Second World War (1944-’45) then was elected President of the Argonaut Rowing Club (1951-‘53) then President of the Argo Football Club from 1953 through 1960.
