It was Vancouver’s loss and Mississauga's big gain when Gayle Hitchens married golf professional Bob Borthwick and left the scenic gem of Canada's West Coast and moved east to a new life. Gayle Borthwick simply continued in Mississauga what she did so well in Vancouver — played golf and won coast-to-coast accolades and the prizes that go with being among the best women golfers in Canada. The road that carried Gayle Borthwick into Mississauga's Sports Hall of Fame as an honoured inductee for the year 1976, led through the fairways of some of Canada’s best and most challenging golf courses. Born in Regina, Sask. Gayle was introduced to golf early in her life and soon showed signs of talent. This talent first blossomed into a fruit at the tender age of 13 when Gayle surprised the field by winning the Vancouver and District Ladies Tournament. Over the years, she added her name to the same trophy a record of six more times. As a junior, she won three British Columbia Ladies championship titles in 1960, '62 and '63. While still a junior player, she also won the British Columbia Ladies Championship twice (back-to-back years in 1962 and '63) and as a senior player finished runner-up on two other occasions, again back-to-back in '66 and '67. Gayle made her first mark on the Canadian scene a year before winning her first B.C. title, when she captured the Canadian Junior Girls Championship in 1959 for the first time. She repeated a year later, then was runner-up in '62.
