Gord Brydson could have made professional hockey his marquee sport. He was good enough to have played at one time or another for Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs with stops in Hamilton, Buffalo and London. Or he could have been a big league football player, having spent two years in the early 1920s as a flying wing and place kicker for the Toronto Argonauts. But he choose a life of a golf professional as a career and golf is much richer for it. For 50 years, Brydson was head pro at the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club. This course that hosted the Canadian Open six times is where the legend of Gordie Brydson was born and grew over five decades. Brydson has been honoured far and wide for his contribution to golf. One recognition that came his way was inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame for 1978. Members at Mississaugua remember Brydson as a classy individual and a impeccable dresser, he was once named as one of the ten best-dressed men in Canada. “I would rather have been recognized as one of the country's ten best golfers,” he responded. His trademark modesty aside, Brydson did all right as a golfer, too. He won the Canadian PGA twice (1944 and 1948), two Ontario Opens (1930 and 1944) and the Quebec Open (1941). He also captured the Canadian PGA Senior crown in '61 and, along the way, was runner-up to Pat Fletcher in the 1954 Canadian Open and finished fourth in the 1941 Canadian Open, won by Sam Snead. For years, he was one of Canada's 10 best players and represented Canada five times in Hopkins International Team matches. He still played golf in 1981when he was 74, participating in a rather special tournament at his beloved Mississaugua. As part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, the club staged an invitational tournament to honour Brydson with well-known golfers Al Balding, George Knudson, Ben Kern, Gar Hamilton.
