It's only fitting that Mississauga's “Mr. Lacrosse” would end up in Mississauga’s Sports Hall of Fame. Howard Biggar was a relative latecomer to Canada's original national game, but once he arrived on the scene, he made lacrosse his business in more ways than one. For his contribution to the game, Biggar became an honoured member of the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame for 1979, a reward for long years of devoted service.Biggar is a life-long Mississaugan, born in the Dixie area, grew up in Dixie and he and his family made the Dixie their permanent home. He first became involved with lacrosse by chance. He was a regular spectator at junior lacrosse games where someone once asked him to help out as timekeeper for a game. That was in 1965, the beginning of a new chapter for him and lacrosse. Soon Howard was the regular timekeeper for the Toronto Township Lacrosse Club, sponsored by PCO Pest Control business. Eventually, he became the Junior A club’s manager and along the way the Township of Toronto became Mississauga. His interest in the game led Biggar to the Ontario Lacrosse Association and the post of league convener in 1970. From there, he went on to become first vice-president then for two years, then president of the Ontario Lacrosse Association, where he was responsible for scheduling, setting up playoffs, fundraising, sponsorship and league management. During the 1970s, Mississauga had teams competing on all three fronts of the junior circuit: Junior A, Junior B and Junior C. Howard had his hand in all three pies. In addition to lacrosse, Biggar also developed an interest in hockey and became timekeeper for the Junior B Streetsville Derbys of the Central Ontario League. Many of the players who were in lacrosse during the summer were also involved with the junior hockey with the Derbys in the winter months.
