Name: Greenwood, Jill
Sport: Curling

Date of Birth:
Place of Birth:

It’s rare for an athlete pursuing excellence to become good, or lucky enough, to achieve fame in one sport. Jill Greenwood has done it in two.
The long-time Mississauga athlete became champion in curling and golf, reaching legendary heights in both her favourite sports. “Historically, sport is a way of life,” Greenwood commented when she became the first curler inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame on June 6, 2003 in recognition of her achievements.“It is a great honour to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and a special privilege to be the first person for curling.”
She is also an honoured member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame. Jill’s curling career took off at the Dixie Curling Club in 1974, the same year Mississauga became a city. She later joined the Highland Curling Club, becoming a dominant force. Ina career spanning some 20 years during the 1980s and ’90s, she represented Ontario frequently in national championships.
She skipped her rink to Ontario titles in 1984 and 1989 and was finalist in 1985. Twice, as provincial winner, she represented Ontario in the national Scott Tournament of Hearts.
She became a Senior competitor in 1990 and in subsequent nine years represented Ontario an unprecedented five times in national championships, emerging Canadian champion four times. In 1998, she was chosen national All-Star Skip.
She also has a room full of trophies from lesser competitions and was winner of numerous play-for-cash bonspiels, including three-time Bacardi Bonspiel champion.
Greenwood also achieved considerable success on the fairways in the other sport she has pursued in between curling seasons. Between 1976 and 1991, she was women’s club champion 10 times at the Weston Golf and Country Club. She was also member of numerous teams in both provincial amateur and senior championships, competing in both Canadian amateur and senior championships and several U.S. senior championships.
Partnered with her son Glen, Jill also won seven provincial Parent/Child championship titles.
Jill Greenwood, a remarkable lady with a remarkable career, put in all in perspective: “It wasn’t so much the end result as the journey.”
