John Brenneman took the “Mississauga Express Route” to the National Hockey League. As many local players did before him, Brenneman first caught on with the Dixie Beehives Junior B team, then advanced to the Chicago Blackhawks’ minor league affiliate St. Catharines Teepees before making it to top level, playing with five clubs during his five-year National Hockey League career. Brenneman started out and spent spent most of his minor league years with Cloverleaf in the old Township of Toronto Hockey League where he advanced from atom to midget. Over his five NHL years, in addition to the Chicago Blackhawks, Brenneman also played with New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Oakland Seals. The closest he came to sipping champagne from the Stanley Cup was 1966-'67 when he spent most of the season with the Maple Leafs. It was the last time Toronto was a Stanley Cup winner. Unfortunately for Brenneman, he was sent down to the lower league before the NHL playoffs began. One of the highlights of Brenneman's career was in 1959 when the left-winger led the St. Catharines Teepees to the Memorial Cup. Being named to the Central Hockey League’s first all-star team in 1963 while on the the Chicago Blackhawks’ roster , also rank high inn his memory bank. Brenneman's NHL days came to a premature end in 1969. While playing with Oakland, he was checked from behind into the boards and suffered a back injury. Over his NHL career, Brenneman scored 21 goals and added 19 assists for 40 points and spent 46 minutes in the penalty box. After a couple of years away from the rinks, Brenneman became one of the first Canadian professional hockey players to cross the Atlantic to play in Europe, where he spent 1972 with Innsbruck in Austria. After his professional hockey career, Brenneman has been employed as a sales representative with Labatt's Breweries since 1979. A life-long resident of Mississauga he had inducted into Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame for 1990.
