Sports Council Overview

Changing times mean changing attitudes. The Mississauga Sports Council is well aware of  this. It’s safe to say the  Sports Council is a work in progress – that’s the way it has been ever since the umbrella organization was established in 1983.

Over the first three decades of its existence the Sports Council has never lost sight of its mandate and primary objectives: the promotion and development of sports in Mississauga. Serving as lobbyist and recommending future direction for facilities to try keeping a breast of the needs of the sports community in Canada’s fastest-growing city has been, and remains, the highest of priorities – and at the same time, an ever-present and growing challenge.

It takes a virtual army of volunteers to keep the wheels of Mississauga’s minor sports turning (there are 60,000 or so volunteer coaches, administrators and referees, give or take a few thousands). Their valued efforts are recognized – together with sporting excellence at various levels –  at the annual Sports Dinner and Awards Night. The event, along with the community showcase Sports Week in the Spring,  and the educational Sports Summit and Seminar Series in the Fall, are some of the Sports Council’s most visible undertakings,  together with management of the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame.

In 1989, Chuck Ealey was inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame

In his rookie season with the CFL he led the Hamilton Ti-Cats to the Grey Cup, was selected MVP of the game, and CFL rookie of the year.

He still holds a 35 and 0 NCAA undefeated record from 1972. In over 35 years his amazing college record has not been broken.

Mississauga recognized Chuck for his exceptional contribution to sport - we can help our friends south of the border do the same. INDUCT CHUCK is a not-for profit organization working to fix the malfunctioning NCAA Hall of Fame selection process. This is where we can add our 2 cents, and we seem to know a deserving athlete when we induct one. Visit this link, check out the facts, and if you want to help fix the BIG oversight, fill out the petition. Just checking out the facts will have you shaking your head - over 35 years...glad our sports gurus are on the ball. MISSISSAUGA WELL REPRESENTED AT 2007 PAN AM GAMES

From July 13 to 29th, 2007, over 5,600 athletes from 42 countries in the Americas strove to achieve their best results on the courts, tracks, fields and swimming pools of Rio 2007.

Field Hockey  - Canada takes the GOLD!

The Canadian men's field hockey team was elated with their Pan Am Games performance. Three of the team members are proud Mississaugan's.

Scott Sandison

A midfielder with the Toronto Field Hockey Club, the 28-year-old has 86 caps with the national team. Scott comes from a field hockey playing family. His mother, Yvonne, competed for Guyana and father, Derek, has umpired internationally. His sister, Leigh, also competes for Canada.

Ranjeey Deol

A forward, Ranjeey has 91 caps to his credit. He made his international debut in 1998 at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His father competed in field hockey for Kenya at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games.

Wayne Fernandes

The 28-year-old also comes from a field hockey family. After following his father to games, Wayne began playing as a 10-year-old. His first international match came in 1996 against Pakistan. A veteran of 122 caps, Wayne plays defense and midfield. His two sisters play the sport on scholarships in the United States.

Taekwondo

First competition in Pan-American Games was in 1987. Although this martial art has its ancient roots in Korea, it only adopted its modern shape in 1955, when a group of Korean masters was able to consolidate the different schools under the technique that is presently known as Taekwondo.
This discipline is composed of four categories, varying according to athletes’ weight. Fighters gain points in combat when they kick or punch the adversary. Kicks are directed to any point of the body above the waist, while punches can only be directed to the opponent’s chest. Fighters use protection gear on their heads, chests, abdomen and wrist. Bouts consist of three rounds of three minutes each and winners can beat their opponents through knock-out, by earning more points than the adversary, or by opponent’s disqualification.

Shannon Condie -  Silver Medallist

19-year-old Shannon represented Canada in taekwondo. A member of the Young Choung Taekwondo Academy, she competed in the Featherweight division. Shannon’s career highlights include gold medals at both the 2006 Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships and International women’s goodwill Olympics. She is a four-time Canadian senior champion and five-time Canadian junior champion. Shannon was Mississauga's 2005 Female Amateur Athlete of the Year. She is currently attending York University, majoring in kinesiology. Her athletic goals are focussed on the 2008 Olympics.

Mike was recognized as Mississauga's 2004 Amateur Athlete of the Year when he and his skipper brought home the Silver Medal from the Athens Olympics.

A member of the Port Credit Yacht Club, the 28-year-old will compete in the J24 class (small one-design keelboat) along with fellow Mississaugan Rossi Milev in sailing. Goodyear placed first at the 2003 J35 North Americans.
